Art Classes and Workshops:
Winter 2010 Class Schedule
The following classes are open to adults,
as well as teens, ages 15 and up. Class sizes are limited
and most fill quickly so register early. If for any reason
a particular class does not fill, you will be notified and
a full refund will be given.
Individualized
Art (ages 12 - 18)
Six week class
Date: Saturdays, Jan. 9, 16, 23, 30, Feb. 6, 13
Time: 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Instructors: Teresa Davis/Diana Cilenti
Cost: $200
If you are passionate about exploring your art in depth, this
class will provide you with studio time and support. You will
focus on a particular category of art of your choice, select
your materials, and produce several quality pieces. You'll write
an artist's statement and have the opportunity to show your
work in Davis Studio or another public venue. Six week class
(no reception)
Note: This is an-going class. Students are encouraged
(though not required) to take more than one, six week session
throughout the year in order to develop a body of work.
Clay
Studio
7 week class
Date: Mondays, Jan. 4, 11, 18, 25, Feb. 1, 8, 15
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Pick up date held after clay is fired - to be announced.
Instructor: Jen Labie
Cost: $200
Explore the exciting possibilities of sculpting with clay.
You will learn the fundamentals of hand building with clay,
such as slab building and pinch pots. Learn how to use textures
and carving techniques to enhance your original pieces. You
will make beautiful and functional pieces such as a tray/platter
or a one of a kind plate or bowl. You will learn how to glaze
your pieces, which will then be fired in a kiln. Each piece
will be your own unique design and creation. Seven week class.
Completed work to be picked up at a later date after fired.
Reverse
Glass Painting
6 week class
Date: Mondays, Jan. 4, 11, 18, 25, Feb. 1, 8
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Cost: $200
Learn the beautiful technique of reverse glass painting. This
art form has existed since ancient times and spread through
much of Europe and Asia. We will explore the possibilities
for our own unique creations inspired by both the early sacred
paintings as well as 19th century folk art. You will paint
subjects of your choosing on glass using acrylic paint. You
will be pleasantly surprised by the results of this unique
art form. All materials are provided.
Painting/Open
Studio
If you have always wanted to try painting
or if you've painted in the past but you're feeling "rusty"
- this is a great class for you. Explore and create in a relaxed
environment. Complete beginners are encouraged to attend.
Paint with either acrylic or watercolor. Select subjects of
your choice & receive individualized technique tips, encouragement
& support to begin your painting adventure. One large canvas
or two smaller canvases as well as all paint and materials
are included in the cost of this class.
Old
Masters Drawing Techniques
6 week class
Date: Tuesdays, Jan. 5, 12, 19, 26, Feb. 2, 9
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Instructor: Clark Derbes
Cost: $200
Learn an exciting method of drawing similar to that used by
the old master's (da Vinci, Rembrandt, Durer & Goya). You
will be taught how to shade and create volume in your drawings
by making multiple small marks using a variety of single width
utensils such as pencils, brushes, paint markers and ink pens.
We will be working on wood boards for fantastic results. You
will complete one or more finished pieces of art ready to
hang in your own private collection.
Nature
Rhythms: Rawhide Rattle Making Workshop
3 week class
Date: Wednesdays, Jan. 6, 13, 20
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Instructor: Alicia Daniel
Cost: $125
Join naturalist and artist Alicia Daniel for a unique opportunity
to craft natural materials into a beautiful, one of a kind
rattle. Using elk hide pieces, as are often used in Native
American drums, you will craft a uniquely beautiful instrument
to use in drum circles, for dancing, for healing or to celebrate
a milestone in life. The class involves designing an original
pattern, sewing the rawhide, and decorating the head and stick.
Materials include native Vermont corn, driftwood from Lake
Champlain, elk hide, feathers, and beads. Join us for this
fun celebration of spirit and nature.
Funky
Quilts
6 week class
Date: Wednesday, Jan. 6, 13, 20, 27, Feb. 3, 10
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Cost: $200
Get cozy this winter with your very own hand crafted funky
quilt. In this class you will learn how to piece, stitch,
and embellish a quilt in your own funky, fun and personal
style. Participants are invited to bring in old clothes, recycled
fabrics, and fun trimmings. Batting and sewing machines will
be provided. You will leave this class with a completed quilt
that is uniquely yours.
High
Fashion Couture
6 week class
Date: Fridays, Jan. 8, 15, 22, 29, Feb. 5, 12
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Cost: $200
Haute couture (French for "high sewing" or "high dressmaking";
refers to the creation of exclusive custom-fitted clothing.
Haute couture is made to order for a specific person and it
is usually made from high-quality fabric and sewn with extreme
attention to detail and finish, using hand-executed techniques.
In this class you will learn step by step how to make a hand
tailored, haute couture gown. Put away your sewing machines
and get ready to pull out your thimbles because this class
is all about gaining confidence and skill in hand stitching
techniques.

Critique
Group
Date: January 10th & Feb. 7th
Time: 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Moderated by Wylie Garcia
Cost: No charge
Open to all artists of all levels in any media, bring your
art to Davis Studio for a critique with peers. This is a safe,
open, and encouraging session to work out ideas, talk about
art, and gather information. It is an open critique, all are
welcome, no charge. Participants are encouraged to select
only one or two pieces of art to bring to the critique. Please

Designer Tote Bag Workshop
Date: Sunday, Jan. 17th
Time: 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Instructor: Claudia Venon
Cost: $75
Get used to saying, "thanks, I made it" when you are seen
around town sporting your new designer tote bag. In this workshop
you will learn how to create your own tote bag pattern, piece
and sew together the bag, add details like pockets or grommets,
line your bag and add handles. You are welcome to bring some
fabrics of your own, or chose from our fabulous pile of wonderful
fabrics and trims.

We will take a brief dinner break so feel free to bring

Create
Your Own Designer Jeans
Date: Sunday, Jan. 31st
Time: 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Cost: $75
Learn to embellish jeans by focusing on applique, stitching,
sewing and printing techniques to create a one of a kind pair
of designer jeans! Bring in the jeans in your life - that
need a little lift. We will provide all other
necessary materials.

Preparing
your application/portfolio for art school
Date: Sunday, Jan 24th
Time: 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Learn how to navigate the application process for undergraduate
or graduate study in art. In this workshop you will strengthen
your writing skills and develop a portfolio that will highlight
your unique vision and artistic merits.

How
to Write an Artist's Statement

Learn how to promote your art and creative vision by writing
a powerful and professional artist statement. With this workshop
you will gain confidence in writing about your art and strengthen
your writing skills. If time permits, you may also get assistance
with your artist's bio and/or cv/resume.
