Art Classes:
Fall 2009 Class Schedule
The following youth classes are designed
for students between the ages of 3 and 18. Class sizes are
limited and most fill quickly so register early. If for any
reason a particular class does not fill, you will be notified
and a full refund will be given.
Get
Creative with Clay (ages 8 - 14)
7 week class
Date: Mondays, Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26, Nov. 2, 9, 16
Time: 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Pick up date held after clay is fired: to be announced.
Instructor: Jen Labie
Cost: $200
Explore the exciting possibilities of working with clay. You
will learn the basics of hand building and will make several
cool and useful projects such as an animal shaped pinch pot,
and an original slab-built plate, bowl, mug or tray. Your
pieces will be glazed and fired in a kiln. Each piece will
be your own unique design and creation. Seven week class,
pieces to be picked up at a later date after fired.

Magical
Mosaics (ages 6 - 12)

Get ready to shimmer and shine. Use beads, gems, jewels and
sea glass to make fantastical mosaic creations - a sorcerer's
box for spells, a mirror fit for a king or queen and magic
pools for a frog prince and garden fairy.

Preschool
Art (ages 3 - 5 with adult)
Looking for a unique, high quality activity for you & your
child? This class is designed for children to attend with
a participating adult. We will explore art through watercolor,
printmaking, painting, collage, sculpture & much more. Each
class session will have three or four engaging art & craft
activities. Six week class (no reception).

Mapping
the World through Art (Asia)
(Home School Students ages 7 -

Home schooled students will create handmade maps that are
geographically accurate as well as visually appealing. Each
map will be a unique work of art. Students will also be introduced
to the art and culture of the region we are mapping. The fall
session will focus on the continent of Asia. Students can
chose to map all of Asia or a specific country such as China,
Japan or Korea. We will learn basic Chinese and Japanese brush
painting techniques and create several quality pieces of art
inspired by this interesting area of the world.

Explore ink and watercolor by learning fun and simple Chinese
painting techniques for landscapes, plants and flowers. Learn
some basic strokes of Japanese sumi-e painting to create fish,
birds, and bamboo. Combine the skills you've learned to create
your own original artwork. Practice writing elegant Chinese
characters and decorate a scroll or a rock. You'll be amazed
at the terrific results you will achieve in this class.

Let your imagination run wild as you create unusual creatures
such as aliens, monsters or robots. You will have the opportunity
to draw with shading pencils and professional markers to bring
your illustrations to life. In addition, you will use a variety
of interesting found materials to create your own moveable
(kinetic) sculpture inspired by one of your drawings.

Create bright, bold and beautiful paintings. Learn painting
& color mixing techniques. Use a variety of tools: brushes,
palette knives, sponges, etc. for interesting effects. Paint
several full color paintings on quality artists' paper & one
painting on a large-sized canvas.

"Make
Friends" with Your Sewing Machine (ages 9 - 15)
6 week class

Learn how to use a sewing machine while making several fun
projects. (You can use one of our machines, or bring in your
own). We will learn sewing machine basics like how to thread
the machine, fill a bobbin, etc. You will also learn to put
in a zipper, make buttonholes, and much more. We will make
a variety of projects while we learn sewing techniques. Our
projects will include: a recycled bag for shopping, a deconstructed
t-shirt, a wallet, and a soft sculpture creature.

Write
and Illustrate a Book (ages 7 - 13)
7 week class

Cost: $200
Each author will be supported in developing characters and
plot for a short story or chapter book. You will be able to
choose from a wide variety of art materials for your illustrations.
(acrylic, watercolor, pastels, pen & ink, printmaking, paper
or fabric collage, etc.) Your original book will be color-copied
and bound with beautiful papers or fabrics and hand stitching.
At the conclusion of the class we will have a reception for
the authors, complete with book readings.
*Note: If there is sufficient interest we will hold
a separate session for home schooled students on the same
dates, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Please call or e-mail if you are interested

Sew
Your Own Stuffed Animals
(ages 7 - 14)

In this class we will make stuffed creatures,
animals, dolls or super heroes out of a variety of fabrics
as well as colorful socks and gloves! You will design your
own stuffed creatures and will learn to make simple patterns
to turn them into something delightfully amusing. Using buttons,
pins, and a variety of hand stitching our creatures will begin
to take shape. Learn to use a sewing machine as well as improve
your hand sewing techniques.
Note: Prerequisite - you must be able to thread
a needle and tie a knot without assistance.

Would you like to learn to draw more realistically? This class
will help you master the basics. You will have the opportunity
to draw from photos and from life. No matter what subject
matter you choose you will be able to practice techniques
that will greatly improve your drawing skill level. Learn
to make your drawings look three dimentional, acquire shading
techniques, learn proportion & perspective skills, and more.

Art (ages 12 - 18)

If you are passionate about exploring your art in depth, this
class will provide you with studio time and support. You will
focus on a particular category of art of your choice, select
your materials, and produce several quality pieces. You'll
write an artist's statement and have the opportunity to show
your work in Davis Studio or another public venue.
Note: This is an-going class, students are encouraged
(though not required) to take more than one six week session
throughout the year in order to develop a body of work.

Santa's
Workshop (ages 6 - 13)
Students will make five quality holiday
gifts in our "Secret Santa Workshop." (No parents allowed
inside or that would spoil the secret.) Gifts will be appropriate
for Christmas gift giving or for birthdays, etc. throughout
the year. Students will also create their own wrapping paper
and cards.
