Ever since I graduated with my BFA in Studio Art eleven years ago, it has been a goal of mine to create a body of work and have a solo show. I have been part of numerous, very fulfilling group shows, yet a part of me has always craved working on a complete body of work that I could call my own.
Since 2008, I acquired my teaching license and have worked at two high schools teaching visual arts. I also recently completed my M. Ed. at St. Michaels College. Since I received my M. Ed., I still continued to dream about really focusing on my own art and creating a body of work. Finally I had the time, so I pursued it!
This is the result of months of careful observation of the places I’ve been and the places I love. In addition to creating my own art I have always loved to travel. I have had some of the greatest opportunities to travel to places in Europe and Africa to learn about and embrace the landscapes and cultures of countries I’ve only read about before. Being able to experience these places made making these paintings so special to me.
I really love the control, layering, and textures I can achieve with oil painting. I really try to capture the textures, colors, and depth of each place. I work from photo references taken by me or my husband. Being able to carefully study and create my own interpretation of these fabulous places has been such a gift to me.
Creating this body of work has strengthened me both as an artist and as an educator. I have been able to carry my art practice into my teaching practice and it’s been humbling being a student of my own work again.
