When you look around you, what do you see? Landscapes? Buildings? Objects?
I see patterns. Starting with my parent's divorce when I was 7, I experienced a number of things that made me realize I was not in control of everything in my life and bad things do happen to good people. Realize may be too subtle a word. Obsess may be more accurate. Fortunately, I developed the ability to cope with this perceived chaos by ordering things around me. Toys, books, playing cards, etc... Putting these items in order repeatedly made me feel like I had established a little control in an unsecured world.
OK, longer story shorter, when I was what would now be called a tween (then it was just awkward), I began making designs using magic markers and graph paper my grandfather, the engineer, had laying around the house. This doodling made me feel safe and secure and I forgot about the world outside for hours at a time. I covered every inch of my bedroom walls with these doodles. Funny thing about magic markers though, they always seem to run out just when you need them. One rainy afternoon I was desperate to seek solace in my doodles, but all the markers had run dry. I was left with the graph paper and a black pen. Filling in the black and white blocks soon lost its charm and I began making shapes to fill the squares. What you see in the gallery is the result of over 30 years of doodling.
